Engadget reported that he announced his intentions to release the technology at the launch of Tesla's Model S on Sunday. Musk had hinted that he would "do something controversial" with Tesla's technology patents, Engadget wrote.

Opening access to the Supercharger fits into Musk's vision of preventing the Supercharger from becoming a "walled garden," Engadget said. The Supercharger, akin to a gas station, allows Tesla owners to charge half the car's battery life in about 20 minutes.
