N. America lifts Alcatel-Lucent

The French network-equipment maker posted a wider-than-expected Q1 loss of about $460 mil — its 4th straight quarter in the red. But Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) sales increased 0.6%, just topping analysts' estimates, thanks to a 15% increase in N. America, home to its largest clients, Verizon Communications (VZ) and AT&T (T). European revenue fell 10%. Former Vodafone executive Michel Combes, who took over as CEO April 1, is expected to present a turnaround proposal this summer. Shares fell 1.4%.
