Nationals manager Dave Martinez hospitalized for heart procedure
Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez left his team’s game Sunday against the Atlanta Braves in the sixth inning after feeling chest pains.
On Monday, general manager Mike Rizzo told reporters that Martinez would not join the team for its road game against the St. Louis Cardinals as he remained in a Washington hospital after undergoing a heart procedure.
UPDATE:
On Tuesday, Martinez was reportedly cleared from the hospital, but not yet approved to travel.
Martinez had a cardiac catheterization
The 54-year-old underwent a cardiac catheterization and remains hospitalized for testing. Rizzo said that Martinez is upbeat, but noted that there is no timetable for his return to the dugout.
A cardiac catheterization is a diagnostic procedure that involves threading a catheter through a vein or artery from the groin, arm or neck into the patient’s heart to probe for heart problems.
It’s not clear what, if anything, Martinez’s procedure revealed.
Chip Hale managing team
Bench coach Chip Hale finished Sunday’s game in Martinez’s stead and will manage the team against the Cardinals.
The Nationals have a 1 1/2 game lead in the National League wild card race. The Cardinals lead the Chicago Cubs by two games in the NL Central race.
Martinez is in his second season managing the Nationals.
