Native Americans march to protest Nev. coal plant
Moapa Band of Paiutes, Sierra Club march to Las Vegas courthouse to protest Nevada coal plant
LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Native Americans, Sierra Club activists and others have completed a three-day, 50-mile walk from the Reid Gardner Station coal plant in Moapa to the Las Vegas federal courthouse.
Moapa Band of Paiutes Chairman William Anderson says in a statement Sunday that the march was held to highlight air pollution, a major concern for tribal members on the reservation.
Reid Gardner borders the reservation and is Southern Nevada's last coal-burning power plant. Tribal members say its pollutants worsen asthma, sinus problems, ear infections and heart disease. The Sierra Club says it also robs tribal members of their traditional lifestyle by forcing them indoors.
A rally at the courthouse on Earth Day on Sunday included a traditional tribal victory dance and song.
