NBA commissioner Adam Silver has contract extended through 2023-24 season
With NBA free agency just days away, the first notable contract negotiated seems to belong to commissioner Adam Silver. The commissioner had his contract extended through the 2023-24 season.
NBA Board of Governors chairman and Toronto Raptors governor Larry Tanenbaum announced the deal Wednesday. No financial details were enclosed.
Silver joined the NBA in 1992, serving multiple roles that included NBA deputy commissioner and chief operating officer. In 2014, he was named the league’s commissioner, and he has held the title ever since.
Through four years, the 56-year-old Silver has made it a point to prove the NBA as progressive. In 2016, he led negotiations with the NBA Players Union, which led to a new collective bargaining agreement. This year, he helped the launch of the NBA 2K League — an esports league.
Under Silver’s watch, the NBA has also seen attendance rise, with 22.1 million fans attending games last year. Not to mention, according to an ESPN piece this past year, franchise values across the league have more than doubled.
