Some Newater Technology (NASDAQ:NEWA) Shareholders Are Down 38%

Simply Wall St

While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Newater Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:NEWA) share price up 15% in a single quarter. But that doesn't change the reality of under-performance over the last twelve months. In fact the stock is down 38% in the last year, well below the market return.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the unfortunate twelve months during which the Newater Technology share price fell, it actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 154%. It could be that the share price was previously over-hyped. It's surprising to see the share price fall so much, despite the improved EPS. So it's easy to justify a look at some other metrics.

Newater Technology's revenue is actually up 86% over the last year. Since we can't easily explain the share price movement based on these metrics, it might be worth considering how market sentiment has changed towards the stock.

A Different Perspective

While Newater Technology shareholders are down 38% for the year, the market itself is up 3.4%. While the aim is to do better than that, it's worth recalling that even great long-term investments sometimes underperform for a year or more. It's great to see a nice little 15% rebound in the last three months. This could just be a bounce because the selling was too aggressive, but fingers crossed it's the start of a new trend. Before forming an opinion on Newater Technology you might want to consider these 3 valuation metrics.
