News summary: Microsoft 2Q tops Wall Street view

MICROSOFT BEATS: Microsoft's December-quarter revenue rose 14 percent to $24.52 billion. Net income climbed to $6.56 billion, or 78 cents per share, from $6.38 billion, or 76 cents per share. Both figures beat what Wall Street analysts expected.

HOT HARDWARE: The company sold 3.9 million Xbox One consoles in the five weeks since its launch in late November. It also more than doubled revenue from Surface tablets to $893 million compared with the September quarter. Both units don't turn a profit, though.

NOKIA DEAL: Microsoft is on track to buy Nokia's phone business and patent rights in the current quarter for $7.4 billion. Nokia's smartphone sales plummeted 29 percent in the December quarter despite releasing new Lumia models.
