SMALL GAIN, RECORD CLOSE: The Standard & Poor's 500 index eked out a small gain to end at a record closing level for the third straight day. The index rose 0.16 points, or 0.01 percent, to finish at 1,744.66.
MIXED BAG: The number of companies reporting third-quarter earnings picks up this week. The results on Monday were mixed. McDonald's disappointed investors, while Hasbro and V.F. Corporation, the owner of numerous clothing brands, beat expectations.
HOME SLUMP: Homebuilders including PulteGroup, KB Home and D.R. Horton slumped after Americans, held back by higher mortgage rates and rising prices, bought fewer previously occupied homes in September than the previous month.
