NH House to vote on raising beer tax
NH House voting whether to raise beer tax a dime; governor pledges to veto bill if passed
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- New Hampshire's House is considering raising the beer tax by a dime in the face of a promised veto if it does.
The tax currently is 30 cents per gallon and paid at the wholesale level. The proceeds from the increase would go toward alcohol abuse and prevention treatment. A state law currently requires a portion of the profits on liquor sales go toward treatment, but lawmakers have been diverting the money to other state spending for years.
A majority of the House Ways and Means Committee is recommending killing the bill when the House votes on Wednesday. And Gov. Maggie Hassan has promised to veto it if it reaches her desk.
