Nick Jonas reflects on his Golden Globe nomination and songwriting journey: 'I wrote my first song when I was 8'

Nick Jonas has been dreaming of this moment for almost his entire life.

The 25-year-old performer received his first-ever Golden Globe nomination earlier this week for "Home," which he co-wrote with Justin Tranter and Nick Monson for "Ferdinand," and he told AOL Entertainment that he's "still riding the high" of the achievement days after it was announced.

"I have these moments where I’m sitting there and staring off into space thinking to myself, ‘Is this real? This doesn't feel real!’" he said. "I’d be lying if I said that I hadn’t thought about this moment and being recognized in this way for as long as I’ve been writing music. It’s a really special thing and I’m trying to savor it all."

Jonas, who told us that he feels "honored" to be nominated alongside "icons" Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey and Raphael Saadiq, has been known for his songwriting since his early days as a member of the Jonas Brothers. The youngest of the three-person group, Nick was largely considered to be the most involved in the band's songwriting, like when he penned "A Little Bit Longer" in 2008 about having type 1 diabetes.

He looks back on his years-long songwriting journey with both pride and disbelief that he's reached this milestone.

"I don’t know if I can fully express in words what [the nomination] means, because it’s so incredibly special," Jonas reflected. "I wrote my first song when I was eight years old coming back from doing a Broadway show in New York City my dad, and it became a part of why our chemistry as a father and son was so strong, and eventually what made my brothers and I become so close. And I’ve made some of the greatest friendships of my life through the experience of being able to walk in a room, take a life experience or idea and turn it into a song."

And as the world continues to rehash and remake old ideas through film, song and television, the "Jealous" hitmaker considers songwriting to be one of the last remaining opportunities to truly create something new.

"I love this idea that there are so few things left in the world that you can still make and leave that day with something," he explained. "I get to do that, and it’s really special. I’ve written probably three or four thousand songs that have gone unnoticed, so to have just one that does [get noticed] in this way and to be a part of a film as incredible as ‘Ferdinard’ makes me feel really grateful."

When tasked with writing a song for the animated film, Jonas said he was given guidelines on what the song should be about, which put a totally new spin on his process of crafting a song.

"12 or 13 years into my songwriting career, I’m having a first experience," Jonas explained. "It’s about staying as fresh as possible and pushing yourself to have these new opportunities and knowing that something good can come of stepping outside of your comfort zone."

Another new experience that the "Jumanji" actor had this week was a surprise performance at Chase Pay Village in the Oculus in New York City, where he shocked fans and passersby with a set of holiday tunes and original songs.

"I get to combine two of my favorite things," Jonas told AOL Entertainment ahead of the performance. "Music and shopping! We're creating a really great holiday experience for my fans, and it's really unique. The Chase Pay Village is a great shopping experience. This time of year is stressful for people, so having the convenience of the mobile wallet and Chase Pay as a tool will be very helpful."
