Nokia Signs Patent Licensing Deal with Wi-LAN
Nokia Networks, a division of Finnish telecommunications equipment manufacturer Nokia Corp. (NOK), recently entered into a patent licensing deal with Wi-LAN. Nokia Networks will acquire licenses to a broad range of Wi-LAN’s wireless patent portfolio covering CDMA, WCDMA, GSM, HSPA and 4G LTE technologies. Similarly, Wi-LAN will also take possession of a portfolio of patent from Nokia. However, the financial terms of the deal have been kept under wraps.
Recently, Nokia Networks declared its intent to buy SAC Wireless, a U.S. based network installation services provider. SAC Wireless, with nearly 450 employees, has worked with leading telecom operators in the past. It has provided assistance in deploying network both in indoor and outdoor cells along with offering 4G LTE renovations and integration of distributed antennas systems. The acquisition of SAC Wireless will not only help Nokia enhance its product portfolio but also lead the company to win further orders.
Last month, Nokia acquired Mesaplexx, a leading Australian radio frequency (RF) filter technology developer, in an attempt to boost the RF capabilities of its basestations. The newly acquired technology will be integrated into Nokia’s flagship Flexi range of basestations. The RF filter, will allow the use of a single antenna for both transmitting and receiving data. This will also facilitate spectrum sharing within a specific geographical area. Some major customers of Nokia’s Flexi range of basestations include VimpelCom Ltd. (VIP) and Chunghwa Telecom Co.Ltd. (CHT).
In addition, Nokia has announced its decision to add more location-aware capabilities to its base stations. Nokia’s collaboration with ChinaCache will help the former attain this objective through the enhancement of the company’s liquid applications. At present, Nokia is conducting trial runs with several wireless operators to test its liquid technology. Notable among them is SK Telecom Co. LTD. (SKM). Nokia currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
