As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Invitation Homes boosted its trailing twelve month EPS from US$0.33 to US$0.37, in the last year. That's a 12% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). While we note Invitation Homes's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 5.8% to US$1.9b. That's progress.

Are Invitation Homes Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since Invitation Homes has a market capitalization of US$23b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. With a whopping US$64m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. This should keep them focused on creating long term value for shareholders.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Invitation Homes, with market caps over US$8.0b, is about US$11m.

The Invitation Homes CEO received total compensation of just US$5.5m in the year to . That looks like modest pay to me, and may hint at a certain respect for the interests of shareholders. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. I'd also argue reasonable pay levels attest to good decision making more generally.
