Instructional Sequence Matters discusses two popular approaches to structuring science lessons: POE (Predict, Observe, and Explain) and 5E (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate). Then it helps both novice teachers and classroom veterans to understand why sequence matters and how to make the necessary shifts.
Ready-to-teach lessons use either a POE or 5E sequence to cover heat and temperature, magnetism, electric circuits, chemical changes, ecosystems, and earth processes. Detailed examples show how specific aspects of all three dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards can translate into the classroom. Throughout the book, reflection questions challenge teachers to embrace and adapt to the new approaches.
Author Patrick Brown also wrote the NSTA Press book Instructional Sequence Matters, Grades 6–8. Both books show that by adopting the explore-before-explain mindset, teachers can restructure the hands-on approaches they already use to become more effective.
