In this article:

It is usually uneventful when a single insider buys stock. However, When quite a few insiders buy shares, as it happened in First Busey Corporation's (NASDAQ:BUSE) case, it's fantastic news for shareholders.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Lead Director Stanley Bradshaw for US$90k worth of shares, at about US$22.52 per share. We do always like to see insider buying, but it is worth noting if those purchases were made at well below today's share price, as the discount to value may have narrowed with the rising price. Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. First Busey insiders own 9.3% of the company, currently worth about US$128m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
