OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (AP) -- State environmental officials have announced a temporary ban on shell fishing in some suburban New York bays.
The state department of environmental control says the ban was instituted over the weekend in response to concerns that some people were becoming ill after eating shellfish.
State officials had no specifics on the number of people who may have become ill.
Environmental officials say the ban is precautionary while it investigates.
The closure affects 4,800 acres on the north shore of Long Island, including parts of Oyster Bay Harbor and Cold Spring Harbor.
The area saw a closure in 2012 that lasted for several weeks.
