NY officials to pick new developer for LI arena

NY officials expected to announce new developer to renovate Long Island's Nassau Coliseum

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) -- Suburban New York officials are set to announce their choice of a developer to renovate the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum and surrounding property.

A press conference is scheduled Wednesday on Long Island.

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano is deciding between two companies that have experience in running entertainment and sports complexes in New York.

The Madison Square Garden Co. is competing against Forest City Ratner Companies, which recently opened Brooklyn's Barclay's Arena.

Ratner's plan calls for a renovated 13,000 seat arena, while MSG envisions an arena to accommodate 14,500.

The New York Islanders previously announced plans to move to Brooklyn in 2015. Ratner's proposal would have the team playing six home games a year on Long Island.

The team has played at the coliseum since it opened in 1972.
