Odell Beckham comes up huge with an great game-winning touchdown catch

This is why the sideline meltdowns really don’t matter. It’s why the new York Giants will live with the occasional penalty.

Because Odell Beckham does things that very, very few receivers can do.

Beckham, with the Giants facing a fourth-and-1 with 1:36 left against the Baltimore Ravens, caught a simple slant pass and took it in for a 66-yard touchdown to turn a Giants’ 23-20 deficit into a 27-23 lead, one that held up for New York.

Beckham has been in the spotlight for some controversial things this season, but the spotlight was also shining bright on him as he made one of the signature plays of the young NFL season.

And right after the touchdown … Beckham took his helmet off, talked some to the Ravens defenders he left in the dust, then went and pretended to propose to the kicking net in his ongoing joke. Take the bad with the good, right? He got a penalty for the helmet stunt, which didn’t help the Giants in that moment, but don’t let it overshadow the play itself.

Because it was magnificent.

Beckham had cornerback Tavon Young in man coverage. The Giants ran a slant-flat combination, with Beckham on the slot, but Young got picked off by safety Eric Weddle trying to defend the flat route. When Young fell, Beckham was in the open field. Safety Lardarius Webb was in a lot of trouble. He had to try and slow down Beckham in the open field, and good luck with that. Beckham put on a nice move and went for the score.

The penalty hurt. That gave the Ravens good field position, and an awful roughing the passer penalty on a fourth-down incompletion put the ball at the Giants’ 24-yard line. But the Giants held for the win.

Beckham got the accolades. He had eight catches, 222 yards and two touchdowns. It’s the second-most receiving yards in Giants history (Del Shofner had 269 in a 1962 game). He bailed out the Giants when it looked like they were on their way to a bad home loss.

That’s what superstars should do.
