Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. Active investors aim to buy stocks that vastly outperform the market - but in the process, they risk under-performance. For example, the One Liberty Properties, Inc. (NYSE:OLP) share price is down 42% in the last year. That contrasts poorly with the market return of 18%. We note that it has not been easy for shareholders over three years, either; the share price is down 35% in that time. Furthermore, it's down 11% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the unfortunate twelve months during which the One Liberty Properties share price fell, it actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 7.1%. It could be that the share price was previously over-hyped.
It's fair to say that the share price does not seem to be reflecting the EPS growth. So it's easy to justify a look at some other metrics.
One Liberty Properties' dividend seems healthy to us, so we doubt that the yield is a concern for the market. The revenue trend doesn't seem to explain why the share price is down. Of course, it could simply be that it simply fell short of the market consensus expectations.

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of One Liberty Properties, it has a TSR of -36% for the last year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Investors in One Liberty Properties had a tough year, with a total loss of 36% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 18%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 0.7% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
