One Million Moms, part of the anti-LGBTQ American Family Association, is objecting to two different shots of Bonnie’s first day of kindergarten. You probably wouldn’t notice it if you weren’t looking for it, but an interracial lesbian couple is seen dropping their kid off and later picking her up from school.
It’s these characters, who have no names, no lines, and no appearances in the foreground, that the organization says “blindsides” families. The subtlety of their inclusion is, in its mind, a cunning effort to desensitize children to the horrors of a child with two loving parents.
“[T]he scene was included and intentionally not announced prior to the movie release in hopes it would be kept quiet to expose as many children as possible,” the organization says in a claim that has echoes of hateful tropes associating homosexuality and pedophilia.

The group clearly grasping at straws in a pathetic attempt to gin up outrage. It would be kind of funny if it wasn’t indicative of such pernicious homophobia.
One Million Moms exists, in its words, “to stand against the immorality, violence, vulgarity, and profanity the entertainment media is throwing at your children.” In practice, it means that the organization — which has way fewer than one million members, by the way — spends its time launching campaigns against positive depictions of anything beyond cisgender heterosexuality.
Beyond its beef with Disney, the group is currently seeking signatures condemning Cartoon Network for celebrating Pride and PBS Kids for showing a gay marriage on Arthur. Because gay cartoon aardvarks are the real threats to America’s youth.
A total of 12,771 people have signed the petition according to the group’s website, just 987,229 short of its namesake million. Meanwhile, Toy Story 4 has grossed $662,789,350 worldwide, evidence that this bigoted nonsense isn’t stopping people from bringing their kids to the critically-acclaimed film.
