Options Traders Expect Huge Moves in Superior Energy (SPN) Stock

Zacks Equity Research
Investors need to pay close attention to Rite Aid (RAD) stock based on the movements in the options market lately.

Investors in Superior Energy Services, Inc. SPN need to pay close attention to the stock based on moves in the options market lately. That is because the Nov 16, 2018 $7.50 Call had some of the highest implied volatility of all equity options today.

What is Implied Volatility?

Implied volatility shows how much movement the market is expecting in the future. Options with high levels of implied volatility suggest that investors in the underlying stocks are expecting a big move in one direction or the other. It could also mean there is an event coming up soon that may cause a big rally or a huge sell-off. However, implied volatility is only one piece of the puzzle when putting together an options trading strategy.

What do the Analysts Think?

Clearly, options traders are pricing in a big move for Superior Energy shares, but what is the fundamental picture for the company? Currently, Superior Energy is a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) in the Oil and Gas - Mechanical and Equipment industry that ranks in the Bottom 7% of our Zacks Industry Rank. Over the last 30 days, one analyst has increased the earnings estimate for the current quarter, while nine have dropped their estimates. The net effect has taken our Zacks Consensus Estimate for the current quarter from a loss of 14 cents per share to a loss of 24 cents in that period.

Given the way analysts feel about Superior Energy right now, this huge implied volatility could mean there’s a trade developing. Oftentimes, options traders look for options with high levels of implied volatility to sell premium. This is a strategy many seasoned traders use because it captures decay. At expiration, the hope for these traders is that the underlying stock does not move as much as originally expected.

China selfie app firm Meitu forays into skincare to counter drop in users

Meitu Inc, the Chinese firm best known for its selfie image-enhancing app, said on Wednesday it is venturing into the offline skincare market as it attempts to offset the impact of dwindling app users and a money-losing smartphone business. Meitu, which listed in late 2016 in what was then Hong Kong's largest tech IPO in a decade, has since suffered losses and its share price has more than halved, as China's smartphone market has run out of steam, shrinking nearly 16 percent in 2018. Meitu said on Wednesday it will launch a face-cleansing brush that can automatically identify the best pulsing setting for a user by detecting his or her individual skin condition.

How Bill and Melinda Gates Are Transforming Life for Billions in the 21st Century

It was March 2018, and once more Bill Gates found himself behind a podium. Now the world's second-richest man and foremost itinerant advocate for the poor was in Abuja, Nigeria, talking about the same theme that had underlain all of these speeches: the need to invest in “human capital.” Among those gathered at the conference center, in the shadow of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, was the Nigerian President himself, Muhammadu Buhari, and what seemed like the entire seat of government, from legislative mandarins to a full house of governors and business leaders—all primed to hear from a man who had, so far, lavished the country with $1.6 billion in grants through his eponymous foundation. Two months earlier, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation had taken the unusual step of absorbing a $76 million IOU Nigeria owed to Japan, for money Nigeria had borrowed to fund a polio eradication effort.

Pier 1 liquidation is a possibility, analysts say

Pier 1 Imports Inc.'s Interim Chief Executive Cheryl Bachelder may have taken an optimistic tone after the home décor retailer reported disappointing fourth-quarter earnings, but analysts were bearish, bringing up the possibility of a liquidation in the not-so-distant future. “Given the trends in business, and its negative earnings per share, EBITDA [earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization], and free cash flow, we see Pier 1 and its $1.6 billion in revenues as potentially at risk of needing liquidation if trends don't improve,” wrote KeyBanc Capital Markets analysts led by Bradley Thomas. KeyBanc thinks Kirkland's Inc. (KIRK)  , Williams-Sonoma Inc. (WSM)  , Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. (BBBY)  and At Home Group Inc. (HOME)  would benefit from a Pier 1 (PIR)  liquidation.
