"The Originals" Fans Are Mad About This Part of the Series Finale

"Let’s just say I will never get over this."·Teen Vogue

On Aug. 1, Vampire Diaries spinoff series The Originals came to a close after five seasons. (Note: stop reading now if you don't enjoy spoilers.)

Finales always spark a lot of intense feelings, since a TV show can never make everything happen that fans want to happen. "The Originals* finale ended this week with the abrupt death of two main characters, Klaus and Elijah. However, fans aren't so much upset that they died (the series did end, after all), but that they didn't get a glimpse of them in the afterlife.

Previously, The Originals (and Vampire Diaries before it) offered glimpses of life after death to see what certain characters were up to after they died. However, such was not the case when Klaus and Elijah sacrificed their own lives, going to the Great Beyond, so that Hope could live. "I came to terms with Klaus and Elijah dying but we don't even get a glimpse of them being happy in the afterlife???" one fan tweet read. "THEY DESERVED A BETTER ENDING. They could have at least show Elijah & Hayley have their dance and them both finding peace in their afterlife," said another.

And one added their disappointment after the initial anticipation: "Watching their ashes fly away was the tough i was balling then I was waiting for the afterlife scene and when I realized it wasn’t gonna happen ... let’s just say I will never get over this."

However, show runner Julie Plec likely doesn't have any regrets about how it all played out. She told TV Line that she knew at least one of them had to go at the beginning of the show, but then decided later it was best if they went together. When asked whether or not Elijah would be reunited with Hayley, she said: "That’s the beauty of it. In death is an opportunity for Elijah’s spiritual redemption. We’ve established that peace exists, that Hayley is there, and that she’s happy and has forgiven him. We’ve asked if that’s where they’re going, and I’d like to hope that it’s where they’ll ultimately find themselves."

Of course, that doesn't explain why the moment wasn't shown. But addressing some fans who may have been upset with the deaths in general, she said: "I can’t see it having ended any other way. Therefore, it’s the ending... We’re telling a story about two immortal beings — what do you think the ending is? The ending is freedom from immortality. Looking at it subjectively, that’s the inevitability of this kind of show. I love that fans love this character so much. They’ve had more than seven seasons of television to be in love with these characters. It’s been a beautiful relationship between the fans and Klaus, specifically. And I just really like closure."
