Osmotica Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:OSMT shareholders incur further losses as stock declines 13% this week, taking three-year losses to 78%

As every investor would know, not every swing hits the sweet spot. But really big losses can really drag down an overall portfolio. So spare a thought for the long term shareholders of Osmotica Pharmaceuticals plc (NASDAQ:OSMT); the share price is down a whopping 78% in the last three years. That might cause some serious doubts about the merits of the initial decision to buy the stock, to put it mildly. And the ride hasn't got any smoother in recent times over the last year, with the price 74% lower in that time. Furthermore, it's down 57% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders. This could be related to the recent financial results - you can catch up on the most recent data by reading our company report.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

Check out our latest analysis for Osmotica Pharmaceuticals

Because Osmotica Pharmaceuticals made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Over the last three years, Osmotica Pharmaceuticals' revenue dropped 23% per year. That means its revenue trend is very weak compared to other loss making companies. And as you might expect the share price has been weak too, dropping at a rate of 21% per year. We prefer leave it to clowns to try to catch falling knives, like this stock. It's worth remembering that investors call buying a steeply falling share price 'catching a falling knife' because it is a dangerous pass time.

A Different Perspective

Osmotica Pharmaceuticals shareholders are down 74% for the year, but the broader market is up 30%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Shareholders have lost 21% per year over the last three years, so the share price drop has become steeper, over the last year; a potential symptom of as yet unsolved challenges. Although Baron Rothschild famously said to "buy when there's blood in the streets, even if the blood is your own", he also focusses on high quality stocks with solid prospects. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Osmotica Pharmaceuticals (at least 1 which can't be ignored) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
