Who Owns Most Of AeroVironment Inc (NASDAQ:AVAV)?

Kayla Ward

In this analysis, my focus will be on developing a perspective on AeroVironment Inc’s (NASDAQ:AVAV) latest ownership structure, a less discussed, but important factor. Ownership structure has been found to have an impact on shareholder returns in both short- and long-term. Since the same amount of capital coming from an activist institution and a passive mutual fund has different implications on corporate governance, it is a useful exercise to deconstruct AVAV’s shareholder registry.

Institutional Ownership

AVAV’s 80.32% institutional ownership seems enough to cause large share price movements in the case of significant share sell-off or acquisitions by institutions, particularly when there is a low level of public shares available on the market to trade. Although AVAV has a high institutional ownership, such stock moves, in the short-term, are more commonly linked to a particular type of active institutional investors – hedge funds. For shareholders in AVAV, sharp price movements may not be a major concern as active hedge funds hold a relatively small stake in the company. Although this doesn’t necessarily lead to high short-term volatility, we should dig deeper into AVAV’s ownership structure to find how the remaining owner types can affect its investment profile.

Insider Ownership

Insiders form another group of important ownership types as they manage the company’s operations and decide the best use of capital. Insider ownership has been linked to better alignment between management and shareholders. AVAV insiders hold a significant stake of 11.05% in the company. This level of insider ownership has been found to have a negative impact on companies with consistently low PE ratios (underperformers), while it has been positive in the case of high PE ratio firms (outperformers). It’s also interesting to learn what AVAV insiders have been doing with their shareholdings lately. While insider buying is possibly a sign of a positive outlook for the company, selling doesn’t necessarily indicate a negative outlook as they may be selling to meet personal financial needs.

General Public Ownership

With 8.64% ownership, the general public are also an important ownership class in AVAV. While this size of ownership may not be enough to sway a policy decision in their favour, they can still make a collective impact on company policies if it aligns with other large shareholders.

Next Steps:

AVAV’s considerably high level of institutional ownership calls for further analysis into its margin of safety. This is to avoid getting trapped in a sustained sell-off that is often observed in stocks with this level of institutional participation. However, ownership structure should not be the only determining factor when you’re building an investment thesis for AVAV. Rather, you should be examining fundamental factors such as AeroVironment’s past track record and financial health.
