NEW YORK (AP) -- The Standard & Poor's 500 stock index has touched an all-time high a day after Washington reached a deal to avoid a U.S. default.

The S&P 500 index rose as much as nine points to 1,730 in the late afternoon, trading above its previous high of 1,729 reached Sept. 19.
