Procter & Gamble Co. is telling consumers to throw out some Old Spice and Secret brand deodorant and hygiene sprays after a cancer-causing chemical was detected in the products.
The Cincinnati-based consumer goods giant issued a voluntary recall of the products Tuesday and directed retailers in the United States and Canada to remove them from their shelves.
P&G also warned consumers to stop using and discard the products because they may contain benzene — a known carcinogen that can cause leukemia, cancer of the blood, cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
However, P&G said the health risk for consumers was low based on exposure modeling and the cancer risk assessments published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

"Daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in our testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences,'' P&G said in a press release.
As of Tuesday, P&G said it had not received any reports of "adverse events" related to the recall of the products, which include one of the company's billion-dollar brands, Old Spice, and was conducting the recall out of an "abundance of caution."
Consumers with questions regarding the recall, which is being conducted in coordination with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Health Canada, can get more information by calling P&G's consumer care team at (888) 339-7689. Consumers can also visit oldspice.com for more information.
P&G said the vast majority of its Old Spice and Secret brand products – including body sprays, solid sticks, soft solids and gel antiperspirants and deodorants – were not affected by the recall.
The company said it would reimburse consumers who bought the recalled products, which include:
Old Spice Sweat Defense Pure Sport Plus Dry Spray.
Old Spice Sweat Defense Stronger Swagger Dry Spray.
Old Spice Sweat Defense Ultimate Captain Dry Spray.
Secret Baby Powder Spray.
Secret Outlast Completely Clean Dry Spray.
