The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. For example, the Palo Alto Networks, Inc. (NYSE:PANW) share price has soared 278% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 18% gain in the last three months. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 10% in 90 days).

Because Palo Alto Networks is loss-making, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last 5 years Palo Alto Networks saw its revenue grow at 30% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. So it's not entirely surprising that the share price reflected this performance by increasing at a rate of 30% per year, in that time. This suggests the market has well and truly recognized the progress the business has made. To our minds that makes Palo Alto Networks worth investigating - it may have its best days ahead.
