The PAR Technology (NYSE:PAR) Share Price Is Up 392% And Shareholders Are Delighted

Simply Wall St

While PAR Technology Corporation (NYSE:PAR) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 15% in the last quarter. But over five years returns have been remarkably great. To be precise, the stock price is 392% higher than it was five years ago, a wonderful performance by any measure. Arguably, the recent fall is to be expected after such a strong rise. But the real question is whether the business fundamentals can improve over the long term.

Check out our latest analysis for PAR Technology

Given that PAR Technology didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Over the last half decade PAR Technology's revenue has actually been trending down at about 2.0% per year. So it's pretty surprising to see that the share price is up 38% per year. Obviously, whatever the market is excited about, it's not a track record of revenue growth. I think it's fair to say there is probably a fair bit of excitement in the price.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between PAR Technology's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. We note that PAR Technology's TSR, at 398% is higher than its share price return of 392%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.

A Different Perspective

PAR Technology provided a TSR of 6.3% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 38% per year for five years. Maybe the share price is just taking a breather while the business executes on its growth strategy. You might want to assess this data-rich visualization of its earnings, revenue and cash flow.
