Paramount delays 'Clifford The Big Red Dog' theater release, citing COVID concerns

Families may have to wait a little longer to see the Clifford The Big Red Dog take over the even bigger screen.

"Clifford the Big Red Dog" was initially set to release on Sept. 17, but the movie has been pushed back, a spokesperson from Paramount Pictures confirmed to USA TODAY in an emailed statement Saturday. The change of plans was attributed to COVID-19 concerns as cases rise across the country. The production company has not set a new release date yet.

The family-friendly movie joins a list of other movie releases that have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Tom Cruise's latest "Top Gun" installment was pushed back twice due to the COVID, the first delay was set to July 2 but was later moved to Nov. 17. Also the highly-anticipated "The Batman" movie, in which Robert Pattinson takes on the role of The Dark Knight of Gotham City, shut down production March 2020. The delay pushed its release to March 2022.

The live-action "Clifford" movie is based on the children's book series written by Norman Bridwell first published in the 1960s. The modernized version features real life characters played by Darby Camp, Jake Whitehall and Kenan Thompson. However the character that gabbed viewer attention after the trailer was released was the enormous CGI-animated Clifford.

Wait to watch: Movies delayed (again) by COVID-19, including 'Top Gun 2' and new 'Mission: Impossible'

Audiences gave mixed reaction after getting a first look a month ago, calling the live-action adaptation "terrifying."

"Just found out how they filmed the Clifford The Big Red Dog film before the CGI and it’s absolutely terrifying," one user wrote.

Another user frightened by the trailer wrote: "i'm sorry but the live-action adaptation of "clifford the big red dog" looks HORRIFYING."

The movie was planned to have a theatrical release before being put on the Paramount+ Streaming platform. On July 20 the movie's Twitter account confirmed "Clifford" would also premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival expected to take place in early September.

USA TODAY reached out to TIFF for comment.
