It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Parker-Hannifin (NYSE:PH), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.
How Fast Is Parker-Hannifin Growing?
The market is a voting machine in the short term, but a weighing machine in the long term, so share price follows earnings per share (EPS) eventually. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Parker-Hannifin managed to grow EPS by 5.9% per year, over three years. While that sort of growth rate isn't amazing, it does show the business is growing.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Parker-Hannifin maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 15% to US$16b. That's a real positive.

Are Parker-Hannifin Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$34b company like Parker-Hannifin. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth US$194m. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!
Does Parker-Hannifin Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
One important encouraging feature of Parker-Hannifin is that it is growing profits. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. The combination sparks joy for me, so I'd consider keeping the company on a watchlist. It is worth noting though that we have found 1 warning sign for Parker-Hannifin that you need to take into consideration.
