Part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s Former Hudson Valley Estate Is For Sale

A Hudson Valley home that previously belonged to Eleanor Roosevelt’s family recently hit the market for $960,000. The estate, known as Oak Terrace, is located in Germantown, New York, and comprises several structures, including the newly listed brick building known as the Oaklawn Gatehouse (other parcels of the family estate were sold off in the 1930s, according to Brownstoner). The dwelling stands two stories tall and now measures around 2,000 square feet, having undergone some alterations in 1938 and then more substantial renovations and expansions in 2000. There are three bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms. It still retains much of its historic French Second Empire style, including the original widow’s walk, Victorian marble bath fixtures, and stained glass windows, with the addition of some more modern and whimsical detailing. According to the listing, updated features include skylights, high-end kitchen appliances, new electrical service and plumbing, and a heating and cooling system.

An antique claw-foot tub and high-tank toilet in the full bathroom are relics of the home’s Victorian roots, as are antique lighting fixtures that accent each room. The listing also shares that there’s a fenced-in Gunite pool just adjacent to the house, as well as a fountain elsewhere on the property. It should be noted that the 8,375-square-foot main house, situated just beyond the gatehouse, is a behemoth in comparison, featuring 10 bedrooms. It was listed for $3 million in 2012.

Roosevelt spent many of her summers at the estate following the death of both of her parents by the time she was nine, and would even return there after high school, spending half her time there until she married future president Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1905.
