The past year for Wallbox (NYSE:WBX) investors has not been profitable

Even the best stock pickers will make plenty of bad investments. And there's no doubt that Wallbox N.V. (NYSE:WBX) stock has had a really bad year. In that relatively short period, the share price has plunged 65%. We wouldn't rush to judgement on Wallbox because we don't have a long term history to look at. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 33% in the last 90 days.

It's worthwhile assessing if the company's economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let's do just that.

View our latest analysis for Wallbox

Wallbox wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last year Wallbox saw its revenue grow by 101%. That's a strong result which is better than most other loss making companies. Meanwhile, the share price slid 65%. This could mean hype has come out of the stock because the bottom line is concerning investors. We'd definitely consider it a positive if the company is trending towards profitability. If you can see that happening, then perhaps consider adding this stock to your watchlist.

A Different Perspective

While Wallbox shareholders are down 65% for the year, the market itself is up 3.9%. While the aim is to do better than that, it's worth recalling that even great long-term investments sometimes underperform for a year or more. With the stock down 33% over the last three months, the market doesn't seem to believe that the company has solved all its problems. Given the relatively short history of this stock, we'd remain pretty wary until we see some strong business performance. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
