Philadelphia City Council to form committee to review regulations in wake of building collapse
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The Philadelphia City Council says it plans to form an investigative committee to review city regulations and procedures in the wake of a deadly building collapse.
The Council plans to formally announce the creation of the special committee Monday.
In a news release Sunday, Council members say the committee will examine procedures related to licenses and permits, construction and demolition, building maintenance and safety, and workers' certification.
A four-story building under construction toppled onto a thrift store Wednesday, killing six people and injuring 13 others. Mayor Michael Nutter has said the city will implement sweeping changes in its regulations of building demolition.
A heavy equipment operator faces charges including six counts of involuntary manslaughter related to the crash. Authorities say he was high on marijuana, but his attorney denies he was responsible.
