The Latest: Customs, VAT issues seen holding up Brexit deal

The European Parliament's chief Brexit official says that over the coming hours in the run-up to the EU summit "there are possibilities for an agreement, but it is not done." He says customs and VAT matters are the remaining big issues to resolve. Guy Verhofstadt on Wednesday praised the "fundamental shift" of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson during the past week of intense negotiations. EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier says Brexit talks with the UK are making "good progress" as both sides try to finalize a last-minute deal ahead of a meeting of EU leaders.

Chipotle Earnings Will Show Continued Strength, Analyst Says

(CMG) stock has had a great year, and KeyBanc Capital Markets expects that strength to continue into the burrito chain's upcoming third-quarter earnings report, due out next week. Chipotle stock (ticker: CMG) has soared 90% in 2019—a period that's seen the S&P 500 rise less than 20%—defeating even the staunchest of bears, and putting it well ahead of fast-food peers, which themselves have done well this year. No wonder then that Chipotle is an analyst favorite, even with a more tempered outlook (although some do worry about the shares' valuation).

Focus: How a small aluminum maker won U.S. trade protection

When Donald Trump won the White House, the sprawling aluminum smelter that hugs the Ohio River here was operating at less than half its capacity, and most of its skeleton crew of 270 remaining workers were fearful about their future. How a tiny industry - only 4,000 U.S. workers are directly involved in making primary aluminum currently - won protection is a testament to savvy lobbying, and one firm's ability to get the Trump administration to view it as a sector that would soon be gone without a government intervention. Century Aluminum Co, which operates the Hawesville smelter and ranks as the second-largest aluminum maker in the United States, spearheaded the fight.

Ex-Credit Suisse Banker Says Secret Affair Helped Fuel $45 Million Fraud

A former Credit Suisse Group AG banker told a federal jury in New York that his decision to take millions of dollars in bribes was fueled in part by his secret love affair with a subordinate. Andrew Pearse, 49, admitted he got at least $45 million for his role in arranging $2 billion in loans to companies in Mozambique. He's the U.S. government's first witness in the trial of Jean Boustani, a Privinvest Group salesman who's accused of defrauding U.S. investors.

Russia’s Thawing Permafrost May Cost Economy $2.3 Billion a Year

Thawing of once permanently frozen ground covering more than half of Russia is putting buildings, pipelines and other infrastructure at risk of damage. The economic loss is 50 billion to 150 billion rubles ($2.3 billion) a year, said Alexander Krutikov, deputy minister for the Far East and Arctic development. Krutikov's comments are another sign that Russia, the world's fourth-biggest emitter, is taking the effects of climate change more seriously.

Boris Johnson Has Sacrificed Quite a Few Lambs

There was much backslapping in Brussels on Thursday after the unthinkable on Brexit finally became reality: A deal between the U.K. and the European Union that allowed both sides to claim victory. After months of hostility, exasperation and hardball tactics, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was able to say he'd secured the “new deal” he'd pledged to deliver ahead of the Oct. 31 Brexit date. Meanwhile, Michel Barnier, the EU's chief negotiator, could say the new changes stuck to the bloc's red lines and protected the integrity of the single market, while keeping intact most of the original withdrawal deal agreed with Johnson's predecessor Theresa May.

Bayer Braces for ‘Significant Surge’ in Roundup Plaintiffs

Bayer AG said it anticipates a “significant surge” in the number of plaintiffs suing the company over the weedkiller Roundup when it reports earnings later this month, adding pressure on the company to seek a settlement. An increase in advertising by U.S. attorneys seeking new clients since mediation talks began will likely add to the litigation, the German drugs and chemicals giant said in an emailed statement. The current number of plaintiffs could exceed 45,000, compared with Bayer's last estimate of 18,400 in July, analysts from JPMorgan Chase & Co. wrote in a note last week.

The “immediate” cease-fire will last 120 hours, Pence said during a press conference Thursday in the Turkish capital following about five hours of talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Pence said the Syria-based YPG, which consists mostly of ethnic Kurd fighters previously aligned with the U.S., has provided assurances that they'll make a “safe and orderly withdrawal.

How to Survive an iPhone Disaster

When iPhone sales stutter, Apple reacts by trying to squeeze even lower prices out of suppliers. Adding to the ignominy at the time, Apple paid what looked like a bargain $300 million last October to take on 300 of Dialog's engineers, and pledged a further $300 million to buy Dialog components over three years to help its transition out of the iPhone supplier stable. While Dialog would no doubt have preferred to retain the status quo, where 75% of its revenue came from Apple (almost all from iPhone components), that made it particularly vulnerable to being squeezed on prices.

Here’s How Hedge-Fund Billionaire Ray Dalio Says the Bull Market Will End

Dalio, however, doesn't see a 2008-repeat with a debt crisis, even as the IMF warned this week of the rising levels of corporate debt building up and investors pushing into riskier assets in search of yield. With rates so low around the world, the return on equity has been higher than the cost of borrowing and companies have been able to borrow, paying barely any interest rate, and almost a promise to never have to pay the principal back because they could just role over the debt, Dalio said. When you look at that, you say that's wild,” he added.
