Popeye Is Making Bright Green Spinach Ice Cream And We Have So Many Questions
Van Leeuwen debuted their latest flavor for summer, and it's...weird. Since Fleet Week-which honors the U.S. Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard-coincides with Popeye's 90th birthday this year, the NYC-based artisan ice cream shop is launching a limited-edition spinach flavor to celebrate.
The sweet and savory vegan flavor, which is called "Popeye's Fleet Treat," is available now through June 2 at participating locations. So if you scream for unconventional ice cream, there are three New York shops stocking it: Hudson Yards, SoHo, and South Street Seaport.
But in all seriousness, WHY? This is coming from a hardcore Van Leeuwen fan, too. Find me there on any given Sunday scarfing down scoops of their beloved Honeycomb flavor. But this just seems...not good.
I'm not alone in this either. A few fellow haters commented on the @Popeye Instagram post to voice their thoughts. "Not gonna lie, that seems pretty gross," one user wrote. Another simply added, "No."
However, the majority does seem in favor of the spinach scoops. Van Leeuwen's announcement elicited responses like "I NEED to try this" and "Interesting 😍."
According to Food & Wine, the ingredient list includes spinach (duh), extra virgin olive oil, turmeric, and sea salt. There's also raw cashew milk, coconut cream, raw organic coconut oil, pure cocoa butter, and organic cane sugar in there.

The flavor, which hit stores Monday, is available as a single scoop ($5.75), double scoops ($7.75), and triple scoops ($9.75). The Popeye IG account told one skeptic "don’t knock it til you try it," so I'll do my best to reserve judgement until I have a chance to test. Updates to come!
