Porsche 918 Spyder Revealed: 887 HP, 78 MPG, $845K

Jeff Perez

It’s been two years coming since the initial introduction of the Porsche 918 Spyder concept left us drooling over our keyboards. Now it’s here, in the production flesh, and it’s still uber-sexy.

We already know that at the heart of it all we find a 4.6-liter V8. Alone, it’s good for some 600 horsepower, but with the introduction of a duo of electric motors, it tacks on an extra 287 horsepower. Total output sits at a hefty 887 horsepower– not too shabby for a plug-in hybrid, if we do say so.

The 918 can manage 0-60 in under 3 seconds– 2.8 to be exact. And carrying on, the Porsche reaches a top speed of well over 200 mph. All this paired to a seven-speed PDK gearbox and an advanced all-wheel drive system.

Along with all this performance, the 918 really lays claim to its hybrid credentials. Sipping up fuel at an average rate of 78 mpg (3.0 liters/100 km), the supercar can also run up to 19 miles (30 km) on pure electric mode.

Naturally, a vehicle as advanced as this won’t come cheap. Starting off at a cool $845K, the 918 is actually competitively priced compared to the $1M+ LaFerrari and McLaren P1 in the same segment. Add on the optional Weissach racing package though (pictured), and you’ll find yourself in an extra $84,000 deep.

The Spyder will be on display this week at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, and is set to go on sale in the US the first quarter of 2014.
