In Ottawa and York Region, north of Toronto, smoke from the wildfire led to school boards cancelling outdoor recesses and sports leagues and in New York, some flights were delayed or cancelled because of low visibility.

Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez says the "world is watching Canada" because of its federal online news bill as he urged senators to stand up to the tech giants' threats to withdraw access to news on their platforms.

Rogers Communications Inc has proposed a framework to Ottawa that would see the telecom company enter into arbitration with BCE Inc, Telus Corp and Quebecor Inc if it is unable to reach commercial agreements with at least one of those carriers by Aug. 15 regarding access to its wireless network on Toronto's subway system.
