In the following excerpt from the Investing Strategies Report, an experienced portfolio manager discusses his asset allocation philosophy for investors:
TWST: What sectors or industries are you especially positive on right now or perhaps overweighting?
Mr. Brown: We're not top-down, so we're not pretending that we know what segments are doing the best. It's fairly mechanical. In fact, I often find that if you can explain why you're in a certain area, it's probably too late. Often, you'll read in a newspaper something like, "international is doing great," and as soon as you read that it's no longer doing great. Or, "gold is wonderful," but as soon as you read about it, it starts to go down.
As soon as you can understand why it is, it's probably too late. So I can tell you the sectors that we're involved in right now, but it doesn't necessarily tell you anything about what is coming down the road.
Domestically, we're in consumer staples, health care, strong dividends. Internationally, we've been in Japan for a while, international real estate, global telecommunications. And in emerging markets, we're in Malaysia and Indonesia. Domestically for the individual stocks, I've noticed that there is a lot of broadcasting and health care and stuff that's related to construction and homebuilding.
Again, we assemble bottom-up; it's not from any sort of prediction of what part of the economy is going to do well.
TWST: Would you give us a few examples of some favorite stocks right now?
Mr. Brown: We're in some gaming stocks, some retail - GameStop (GME), Time Warner (TWX), Sinclair Broadcast (SBGI).
TWST: What about each of those appeals to you?
