Rams RB Todd Gurley really seems to like the idea of trading for Odell Beckham

In case you were wondering, one of the Los Angeles Rams’ stars is keen on the idea of trading for one of the NFL’s best receivers.

Rams running back Todd Gurley told Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times that he is friends with New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham — “That’s my boy,” Gurley said — and he would love it if the Rams pulled off a trade for Beckham.

“If we had him, man, it would be awesome,” Gurley said. “I’d be happy, [Jared] Goff will be happy, coach [Sean] McVay will be happy, [owner Stan] Kroenke, the whole team would be.”

Before we get to how realistic a trade is, let’s acknowledge that it would absolutely be awesome. Teaming Beckham and Gurley would give the Rams arguably the best receiver and running back in the league (though the Pittsburgh Steelers’ duo probably wins that argument). They have stars on defense with Ndamukong Suh, Aaron Donald, Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib. Right now the Rams are perhaps the buzziest team in the NFL going into the 2018 season, and it would be off the charts if they got Beckham.

Could it happen? Well …

The Giants aren’t exactly trading Beckham cheap, and it’s still a major investment for any team acquiring him. Gurley is free to talk about trading for Beckham because he’s not the one that would have to figure out how to get Beckham’s contract extension under the salary cap. Beckham would probably cost the Rams this year’s first-round pick, another high pick that might have to be a future first-rounder, and a contract extension that surpasses the $17 million per year that Antonio Brown makes. And they also need to extend Donald, and soon will need to extend their young quarterback Goff.

But in the meantime, it’s fun to dream. Beckham poured some gasoline on that fire by telling two Rams players he wants to play with them, a source told the New York Daily News. Even if the odds are low that the Giants actually get a deal done, that’s the kind of trade that would take an already interesting NFL offseason to a whole new level.

Especially if Gurley gets his wish and Beckham lands with the Rams.
