Police, troops mobilized as nationwide blackout hits all of Trinidad & Tobago
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) -- Power is gradually being restored across Trinidad and Tobago after a rare nationwide blackout struck the twin-island Caribbean country.
The country's Electricity Commission says the blackout was caused by a problem with the natural gas supply in Trinidad and a subsequent failure at a plant on the island of Tobago.
The country of 1.3 million is a major producer of natural gas and one of the most economically developed countries in the Caribbean.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says the government mobilized troops, police and air patrols to maintain security shortly after the power went out early Friday. She says there were no major incidents of violent and one attempt to loot a supermarket that was prevented by police.
