Rays ace Blake Snell lands on injured list with broken toe after bathroom incident

The 2018 American League Cy Young winner is headed to the injured list just 16 games into the season. The Tampa Bay Rays announced on Tuesday that Blake Snell has been placed on the IL with a broken toe.

Snell’s broken toe is not related to his shortened start against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday. Manager Kevin Cash took Snell out of the game after just six innings and 82 pitches, having allowed zero runs and no hits until the sixth inning. Cash said after the game that lifting Snell from the game was about workload management. The Blue Jays promptly rallied and the Rays lost 3-1.

The broken toe was sustained while doing a little bathroom rearranging at a particularly inopportune time.

Snell pitched like gangbusters in 2018, turning in a 1.89 ERA over 180 2/3 innings. His first start of 2019 was iffy (he allowed five runs in six innings against the Houston Astros), but he has a 0.47 ERA in the three starts since then. This injury is hopefully minor enough that it won’t affect the groove he’s been in, especially since he’s expected to miss just one start.
