5 questions I ask before picking a dividend stock

When researching a dividend stock, I always follow the following screening criteria:

  • Is it the top 25% annual dividend yield payer?

  • Has it paid dividend every year without dramatically reducing payout in the past?

  • Has the amount of dividend per share grown over the past?

  • Can it afford to pay the current rate of dividends from its earnings?

  • Based on future earnings growth, will it be able to continue to payout dividend at the current rate?

How does Brady fare?

Brady has a trailing twelve-month payout ratio of 36%, which means that the dividend is covered by earnings. Furthermore, analysts have not forecasted a dividends per share for the future, which makes it hard to determine the yield shareholders should expect, and whether the current payout is sustainable, moving forward.

When considering the sustainability of dividends, it is also worth checking the cash flow of a company. A company with strong cash flow, relative to earnings, can sometimes sustain a high pay out ratio.

If dividend is a key criteria in your investment consideration, then you need to make sure the dividend stock you're eyeing out is reliable in its payments. BRC has increased its DPS from $0.68 to $0.85 in the past 10 years. It has also been paying out dividend consistently during this time, as you'd expect for a company increasing its dividend levels. These are all positive signs of a great, reliable dividend stock.

In terms of its peers, Brady has a yield of 1.8%, which is high for Commercial Services stocks but still below the market's top dividend payers.

Keeping in mind the dividend characteristics above, Brady is definitely worth considering for investors looking to build a dedicated income portfolio.
