Real estate tops calendar this week

This week's event calendar mostly focuses on residential real estate.

The National Association of Home Builders will release its sentiment index at 10 a.m. today, reflecting the outlook of companies in the industry. Forecasters anticipate a reading of 48, up from 46 last month.

Housing starts and building permits follow tomorrow morning. The German ZEW survey of economic sentiment will also be released early in the morning, which could affect broad-market sentiment.

Wednesday brings the Federal Reserve's interest-rate decision and subsequent press conference by Chairman Ben Bernanke. FedEx will report quarterly results in the morning as well, followed by tech giant Oracle in the afternoon.

Real estate is back in focus on Thursday, with the FHFA Housing Price Index and existing home sales both on the agenda. The Labor Department will also announce weekly jobless claims.

Nothing is scheduled for Friday.
