Originally published by J.T. O'Donnell on LinkedIn: What It Is (REALLY) Like To Work On An All-Female Team In 2017
International Women's Day strives to shine the light on the injustices and inequities that millions of females face. I'm thrilled there's a day dedicated to this and love seeing all the attention it's getting. However, when it comes to my career, I must admit I haven't felt as much of the adversity that other women have faced. Why? I believe one of the reasons is because I got to work on an all-female team when I was 27 years old. It changed my life. I was lucky enough to be mentored by strong female leaders who showed me what was possible. Working along side them made me realize I could achieve more than I ever thought I could. And recently, it's happened again...
Working with an all-female team has its perks.
For the last year and a half, my company, Work It Daily, has been an all-female team. This will change soon because I know there are some excellent future male colleagues out there who will make great additions to our team!
However, if I could bottle what it feels like in our office right now and give it to every woman on the planet for International Women's Day, I would. Why? Working with all women again has been just as powerful this time around. I feel safe. I feel trusted. I feel appreciated. I feel smart. I feel successful. I feel supported. I feel inspired.
Better still, working together has enabled us to overcome the typical business challenges that hold many small companies back. Ultimately, positioning us for expansion. It's an exciting time - and I have my brilliant female co-workers to thank for that.
But, this got me thinking, "What does it feel like to my coworkers?" So, I asked them. Here's what they had to say...
This has been my very first experience working in an all female office and it's been such a great one. Getting the opportunity to work with other women, from distinct walks of life, educational backgrounds, and career experiences is so uplifting, raw, and unique. Although we are all very different, we all seem to share a really unspoken but felt bond, and we all just seem to get each other. Imagine everyone in a room getting a joke you just told, it feels just like that, an accomplishment & warm. I didn't really feel like an equal in the workplace until I started working at Work It Daily and I wouldn't trade that ever. - NABEELA
I LOVE my team here at Work It Daily. We support each other, listen to each other, and cheer each other on. I think each and every woman on this team brings something special to the table that has allowed our little company to bloom into something that's going to change the world in a BIG way some day. We focus on developing each other's strengths, not weaknesses, and leverage them as much as we can. I love these ladies, and I'm so honored to be a part of this amazing company. - ARIELLA
I appreciate the team of women I work with every day. We listen, we suggest - we challenge each other without fear. We support, we encourage, we strive make our mission better every day. - PAULA
I enjoy working in an office of women because I feel more comfortable voicing my opinion. I know my team members may not always agree with my suggestions, but they are always willing to listen and provide me with feedback. We work in an environment where everyone's voice is heard, and everyone feels comfortable being themselves, and I think that is very rare. - JEN
Working with the lovely ladies of Work It Daily, it has shown me what amazing things an all-female team can accomplish. Even with the odds working against us, we continue to strive for only the best and are always looking toward innovation and the future. - LINDSAY
It was so nice to see the synergy in each of my teammate's responses.
But, the truth is...
The real reason our workplace is so great has nothing to do with us all being women. It's because everyone on the team is committed to making it that way. Over the last year and a half, our culture has been defined and entrenched into something truly exceptional - and we plan to keep it that way. Which means, new employees will become part of a company that brings out the best in them, regardless of their gender.
I hope this posts inspires everyone out there to search for a workplace that makes you feel this way. They are out there. And, if you are lucky enough to work in one already, be grateful and do what you can to help others find the same. In my experience, the real way to empower women is to create environments where everyone, male and female, can thrive.
