Reflecting on Firstwave Cloud Technology's (ASX:FCT) Share Price Returns Over The Last Three Years

Simply Wall St

It is a pleasure to report that the Firstwave Cloud Technology Limited (ASX:FCT) is up 95% in the last quarter. But that doesn't help the fact that the three year return is less impressive. In fact, the share price is down 55% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return.

View our latest analysis for Firstwave Cloud Technology

Given that Firstwave Cloud Technology didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

Over three years, Firstwave Cloud Technology grew revenue at 11% per year. That's a pretty good rate of top-line growth. That contrasts with the weak share price, which has fallen 16% compounded, over three years. To be frank we're surprised to see revenue growth and share price growth diverge so strongly. So this is one stock that might be worth investigating further, or even adding to your watchlist.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. So we recommend checking out this free report showing consensus forecasts

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Firstwave Cloud Technology's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. We note that Firstwave Cloud Technology's TSR, at -49% is higher than its share price return of -55%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.

A Different Perspective

The last twelve months weren't great for Firstwave Cloud Technology shares, which performed worse than the market, costing holders 42%. The market shed around 3.4%, no doubt weighing on the stock price. Shareholders have lost 14% per year over the last three years, so the share price drop has become steeper, over the last year; a potential symptom of as yet unsolved challenges. We would be wary of buying into a company with unsolved problems, although some investors will buy into struggling stocks if they believe the price is sufficiently attractive. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - Firstwave Cloud Technology has 5 warning signs (and 2 which are a bit concerning) we think you should know about.

Firstwave Cloud Technology is not the only stock that insiders are buying. For those who like to find winning investments this free list of growing companies with recent insider purchasing, could be just the ticket.
