Reflecting on HC2 Holdings' (NYSE:HCHC) Share Price Returns Over The Last Five Years

This week we saw the HC2 Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:HCHC) share price climb by 11%. But that can't change the reality that over the longer term (five years), the returns have been really quite dismal. Indeed, the share price is down 67% in the period. Some might say the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. Of course, this could be the start of a turnaround.

HC2 Holdings isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

Over five years, HC2 Holdings grew its revenue at 13% per year. That's a fairly respectable growth rate. The share price, meanwhile, has fallen 11% compounded, over five years. That suggests the market is disappointed with the current growth rate. A pessimistic market can create opportunities.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think HC2 Holdings will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).

A Different Perspective

HC2 Holdings provided a TSR of 15% over the last twelve months. But that return falls short of the market. But at least that's still a gain! Over five years the TSR has been a reduction of 11% per year, over five years. So this might be a sign the business has turned its fortunes around. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
