This has to be up there on the list of most unfortunate injuries.

Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer broke his nose after he bunted a ball into his face during batting practice before Tuesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Scherzer is scheduled to pitch Wednesday, and his status is up in the air.

Here is how the injury occurred. Scherzer was casually practicing his bunting, but the ball suddenly came off his bat at a sharp angle and struck him in the face:

Scherzer immediately recoiled in pain and was taken off the field, holding a towel to his face.

He was later seen wearing a splint on his nose.

The 34-year-old is 5-5 with a 2.81 ERA in 15 starts this season for the Nationals.
