So you enjoy the wonderful curves and body panels of a classic muscle car, but don’t have the time to get under the hood and replace the fuel pump, distributor points, or mess with the carb? There is a style of car that has all the retro looks that you’re seeking, but with modern internals that will ensure you’ll never be stuck on the side of the road. It’s called a resto-mod, and it’s the best blend of old and new.
There are many avenues an enthusiast can take when it comes to automotive restoration, but these paths have their own pitfalls. If you start restoring a Porsche 911, you might forget to check for rust between the floor panels, or you might go looking for that super-rare Pascha interior. It can be a slippery slope.
Adherence to strict originality is a noble cause, but is it not for everyone. I have always said that being a steward of the brand is respectable, but if your piece is considered “museum quality” and it not actually in a museum, then you are a sucker. Cars are meant to be driven, and a certain amount of leeway is afforded to those creative enough to use the old body panels to create something entirely new. This is where this resto-mod comes in.
There are a few ways of going about a resto-mod. The first is to take the original and add new components like modern disc brakes, larger wheels and tires, and updating suspension and engine components. Then there is what the folks at Time Machines did to this Mustang. The Florida-based muscle car shop created this combination of the 1969 Mustang and the 2009 Mustang. The interior of the ’09 is utilized, while much of the rest of the car is from the ’69.
From there, it receives a full complement of modern performance components, including the supercharged 4.6-liter V8 making 600 horsepower! The beauty is that this Mustang might have classic looks, but with modern suspension components, it will not sway through a turn like its from the dark ages!
