Retail sales, consumer data on docket

Consumption is the main theme on today's calendar of economic reports, while JP Morgan releases quarterly results before the opening bell.

The Commerce Department will announce March retail sales at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists anticipate no change from February, when a gain of 1.1 percent was recorded. The producer price index will also be reported at the same time, but it's unlikely to sway sentiment because inflation hasn't been a major concern recently.

The University of Michigan issues its gauge of consumer confidence at 9:55 a.m. ET. Forecasts predict a reading of 78, down from 78.6 in March.

Next week's calendar will see housing data and German economic sentiment on Monday and Tuesday. Major companies scheduled to report earnings include Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, Coca-Cola, Intel, Bank of America, and American Express.
