Retail sales, overseas data on docket

Today's calendar includes economic releases in the United States and abroad, as well as more domestic employment data.

Monthly same-store sales reports will trickle in from retailers throughout the morning, which could affect sentiment in those names.

Germany will also report manufacturers' orders early in the session, while the central banks of the Eurozone and Britain will announce monetary policy. All three could affect broader trading activity.

Challenger Gray will issue its report on layoffs at 7:30 a.m. ET. An hour later the Labor Department will release more important numbers on weekly jobless claims. Economists forecast a reading of 355,000, up from 344,000 last week.

Natural-gas inventories will be released at 10:30 a.m. which could affect trading in some energy companies.

Japan will also announce gross domestic product in the evening after the closing bell.
