PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A former Textron Inc. executive has been elected chairman of the board of directors at the Rhode Island Foundation.
The foundation announced that Frederick Butler will lead the 13-member board through 2015. He worked at Textron in various legal and executive positions from 1980 until his retirement in 2009. He has been on the foundation board since 2009.
Butler also serves on the Rhode Island Ethics Commission and is a trustee at Salve Regina University.
He succeeds David Hirsch, who says he passes the mantle to Butler "with great confidence."
The foundation board also welcomed Ernest Torres as its newest member. He is a retired chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island. He was appointed by the state Supreme Court's chief justice.
